Fukushima 85 times more Radioactive Cesium-137 than Chernobyl

With reactor #4 still teetering near total disaster, more and more information is filtering onto the net. The latest I have found is from the Nuclear Department of University California, Berkeley.

The piece concludes with this "... Many of our readers might find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of the figure, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy the world environment and our civilization. This is not rocket science, nor does it connect to the pugilistic debate over nuclear power plants. This is an issue of human survival... "




Here are some fun facts:

1. 11,421 rods total at Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant.
2. 1,231 irradiated spent fuel rods in pool No. 4
3. 100' ft. No. 4 pool above ground, damaged and exposed to open elements (spewing radioactive material).
4. 37 million curies (~1.4E+18 Becquerel) of long-lived radioactivity. 
5. 134 million curies of Cesium-137 (~85 times Chernobyl).

The total spent reactor fuel inventory at the Fukushima-Daichi site contains nearly half of the total amount of Cs-137 estimated by the NCRP to have been released by all atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, Chernobyl, and world-wide reprocessing plants combined.

Tokyo Protesters Demand Permenant Shutdown of All Japanese Reactors

Beastie Boys Adam Yauch lost at age 47

Rap pioneer and original member of the legendary trio, the Beastie Boys, Brooklyn, NYC finally lost his battle with cancer at the age of youthful age of 47. Back in 2009, Yauch was diagnosed and treated for a cancerous parotid gland and lymph node. He underwent surgery and radiation therapy during his treatment and was optimistic his health would improve. The prolific artist and activist MCA will be survived by his wife Dechen and daughter Tenzin.

Radioactive Current will miss this truly special spirit soul and wish him only the best along his journey.

UC Berkeley Professor Dr. Jim Bishop Helps Search for Radioactive Isotopes in Ocean

Dr. Jim Bishop is a Professor of Marine Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and is helping to pioneer trace metal research in the marine environment. An area of particular interest to me was learning radioactive isotopes are being included in the trace metals Dr. Bishop and GEOTRACES researching.

GEOTRACES is an international programme which aims to improve the understanding of biogeochemical cycles and large-scale distribution of trace elements and their isotopes in the marine environment. Working with GEOTRACES, Professor Bishop and his team have been able to log substantial amounts of critical data which is continuing to play a major role in understanding the ocean's biochemical composition.

One of our goals here at Radioactive Current is working with Dr. Bishop and GEOTRACES to fully integrate portions of data compiled by Dr. Bishop and GEOTRACES into exiting models  in order to better understand what the impact of increased levels of radioactive material stemming from the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster has had on our marine environment globally.

Radioactive Plume Impact Map

This is some of the best work done projecting the potential path the radioactive plume stemming from Fukushima, Japan is taking. Headed directly for Hawaii and the Continental USA. Super scary stuff folks.

Sunny days & gamma rays

Another sunny and radioactive day in california. After reading about the impending radioactive plume heading directly for california via the pacific ocean, I'm feeling less and less confident that I will ever be able to surf free of radiation in the water. That is an idea that doesn't sit well with me. I have always envisioned myself settling down somewhere in coastal california and surfing to stay healthy.

Will there be anywhere that will escape the wrath of fukushima? Not likely.

Good morning from sunny and beautiful yet Radioactive California.

Looking forward to a great day driving into work listening to national public radio. heard about a high school student winner of an essay challenge and received a $5000 grant from Physicians for Social Responsibility. I vaguely recall hearing doctor Helen Caldicott referring to Physicians for Social Responsibility, and I definitely think that will be the one group that Radioactive Current will reach out to.
Also, I certainly feel like one of my main goals for Radioactive Current is a project documentary film.
